Madder is obtained from the roots
of the Rubia tinctorum, a perennial plant native to Asia Minor, then cultivated
in Italy, France and Holland. Madder dyeing of cotton is called Turkey red, which has a blue tint. Cinnamon red or madder
red has an orange tint and is found in cotton, linen, silk and wool. Madder red is usually found in combination with shades
of purple and brown; black, light purple, and light blue were accent colors.
