April 2011 will begin the 150th anniversary cycle
of the American Civil War. Many events and activities are planned or being planned in observance of this significant milestone.
This page will list events, activities, exhibits, and news regarding the recognition of the sesquicentennial
throughout the country, not just Texas. If you have information on a topic you feel should be included here, please email

Events
Henkel Square Home Front Events Events are being planned through 2015 to interpret the effects of the
war on the Texas home front.
The Road to Secession December 1-5, 2010 at Camp
Gilmont, in northeast Upshur
County, Texas. The event will feature both an academic symposium and a Living History event
and will address the question: Why did the good and Christian people of the South choose Secession in 1860-61? Organized
by the Texas Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Army of the Trans Mississippi, Sons of Confederate Veterans.
To Prevent the Effusion of Blood Charleston, South Carolina. January 7-9, 2011. On the night of December
26, 1860, Major Robert Anderson decided to move the Fort Moultrie Garrison to Fort Sumter in his words "To prevent
the effusion of blood." A merchant ship, the Star of the West, was sent with supplies but was turned back by South
Carolina Artillerists on 9 January 1861. This event is still considered by many scholars as the first shot of the Civil War.
We are holding a living history to commemorate these events at Forts Moultrie and Sumter.
Siege and Seizure of Sumter April 8-14, 2011. Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the siege
and seizure of Fort Sumter, troops are being raised to garrison this fort for a week long, high quality, living history
opportunity.
Raising the First Volunteersor on the Authentic Campaigner Historic Fort Snelling, Minneapolis, Minnesota. April 14-17, 2011. When news arrived in the Nation's Capital of
the fall of Fort Sumter, Minnesota's Gov. Alexander Ramsey immediately tendered 1000 men. Within days 10 companies were
raised; rugged frontiersmen ready to serve. Be one of those men 150 years later, almost to the day, in the historic fort
where they trained.
Camp Jackson 150th Anniversary April 29-May 1, 2011. Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis County. Camp Jackson will be one
of the first of the Sesquicentennial events in the nation and is in conjunction with Freedom's Gateway:
St. Louis In The Civil War. This event will be held at Jefferson Barracks and will depict events that took
place during the Missouri Volunteer Militia's encampment in early May, 1861.
Battle of Rich Mountain July 9-10. Beverly, WV. In the early days of the American Civil War, control of
transportation routes through western Virginia was a strategic goal of both
Union and Confederate planners.
Battle of First Manassas (Bull Run) July 21-24, 2011. Manassas, VA. This 4 day event will feature reenactments,
living history demonstrations, speakers, art, music, and many other historical commemorations and activities for the family.
Fortifying New Madrid New Madrid, Missouri. Oct. 13-16 of 2011. This four day event will correspond with the 150th anniversary of the actual
events being portrayed. Impression will be Missouri State Guard.

on the importance of this pivotal period in our nation's history, and to consider the future of the most tangible reminders
we have left — our Civil War battlefields.
Civil War Traveler This webpage is Civil War Traveler's effort to keep up with
the websites created for the 150th anniversaries.
National Park Service Civil War Website In preparation for the Sesquicentennial, the National Park Service-through the collective efforts of the superintendents
at Civil War-related parks- has undertaken a multi-faceted, multi-year, integrated program that will simultaneously transform
and improve interpretation of the Civil War. Our national parks in partnership with state and local communities will provide
a national forum on this website for this commemoration.
Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission commemorates the
150th anniversary of the Civil War in Arkansas by sanctioning events, encouraging research and education programs related
to Civil War Arkansas, and preserving the sites that witnessed the Civil War in Arkansas. The Civil War Sesquicentennial
will be celebrated between 2011 and 2015.
Arkansas Toothpick 150th Anniversary Project The intent of this column is to inform readers on the various goings-on
150 years ago that lead up to the fraying of our nation to the point of rebellion and revolution, to a time when the country
split over contradicting views. By the time the Civil War started officially in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina in April,
1861, Jefferson County had already had its share of problems, both militarily and politically. Over the next five years,
the story of the people of Jefferson County will be explained, including various cultures and nationalities of citizens
that called Jefferson County home.
Connecticut Commemorates the Civil War This website presents some of the initial plans on how the Civil War Planning Committee is preparing to commemorate
the 150th anniversary of Connecticut and the Civil War.
Fort Sumter / Fort Moultrie Trust (the Trust) Coordinating Committee Ccoordinate and promote
the commemoration of the Civil War during the Sesquicentennial years 2010 – 2015. This will consist of special events,
re-enactments, lectures, and other programming that will examine the causes and effects of the Civil War from the various
perspectives of all who were impacted by it.
Indiana’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration The mission of the Indiana Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee
is to encourage appropriate commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War (1861-1865) and to help Hoosiers recognize
the effect the most devastating conflict in the nation’s history had on our state.
Kentucky's Civil War Landscapes During the commemoration of the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War,
KHS will highlight the varying political, military and physical landscapes of Kentucky and its people before and during
the war.
New Jersey Civil War Sesquicentennial The New Jersey Civil War 150th Anniversary Committee plays a preeminent role in our state's observation and commemoration
fo New Jersey's part in the Civil War.
North Carolina Civil War Sesquicentennial The North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources,
Office of Archives and History, established a team in 2006 to plan for commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the
Civil War. The mission is to prepare appropriate and historically accurate state-sponsored activities to commemorate the
richness, diversity, significance of North Carolinians’ Civil War experience.
Ohio Civil War 150 The Civil War story in Ohio touches almost every community in the state,
and this website is a place for those interested in its vast and fascinating history to come together around the anniversary
of that time period.
Pennsylvania Civil War 150 A cornerstone of the commemoration, www.PACivilWar150.com is a comprehensive
Web site containing an interactive timeline, a statewide events calendar and many in-depth stories recounting the experiences
of real Pennsylvanians during the Civil War.
Tennessee Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission The Tennessee Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission was created to lead the state's
efforts in commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission The
General Assembly of Virginia created the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American
Civil War Commission in 2006 to prepare for and commemorate the sesquicentennial of
Virginia's participation in the American Civil War.
